Punjab University (PU) Merit Calculation Explained

Punjab University (PU) — the University of the Punjab — is one of the oldest and largest universities in the country, and its merit process catches a lot of students off guard because it relies on a mandatory entry test, unlike many FSc-only public universities.

The PU merit formula

For most BS programs, PU combines an entry test with your academic record:

  • 25% — PU entry test
  • 75% — academic record (Matric and Intermediate, combined on a ratio basis)

The academic portion is calculated from your Matric and FSc marks together. Meritly approximates this as roughly 10% Matric + 65% FSc + 25% test so you can estimate quickly, but PU's official method uses a marks-ratio calculation — treat the estimate as a guide.

How this differs from FSc-only universities

At universities that admit on FSc alone, strong intermediate marks are enough. At PU, skipping or underperforming on the entry test will sink your merit no matter how good your FSc is — the test is non-optional and carries real weight.

PU campuses

The same formula applies across PU's campuses, including Lahore (main), Gujranwala and Jhelum, though closing merit differs by campus and program.

Estimate your PU merit

Enter your Matric, FSc and PU test scores into the Meritly matching engine to estimate your aggregate for PU programs alongside other universities. Because PU uses a ratio-based academic calculation, always confirm your exact merit with PU's official admission regulations.
